Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space

Online version of Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space for PC DOS. Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space (BARIS) is a strategy simulation of the Cold War space race by the studio Strategic Visions, published by Interplay in 1993. The player takes charge of either the American NASA or the Soviet space program with the goal of being the first to land a human on the Moon - allocating the budget for rocket development, recruiting and training astronauts, building prestige through historical milestones and gambling on missions where haste ends in disaster. Fritz Bronner built the game on his board game LIFTOFF!, and Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin served as an advisor. In 2005 it was released as open source under the name Race Into Space and the community maintains it to this day.

IBM PC with MS-DOS

Online emulated version of Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space was originally developed for the IBM PC and compatible computers, with MS DOS - Microsoft Disk Operating System. It is an OS for x86-based personal computers mostly developed by Microsoft and released in 1981 as PC DOS 1.0.
MS-DOS was targeted at Intel 8086 processors running on computer hardware using floppy disks to store and access not only the operating system, but application software and user data as well. Progressive version releases delivered support for other mass storage media in ever greater sizes and formats, along with added feature support for newer processors and rapidly evolving computer architectures. Ultimately, it was the key product in Microsoft's development from a programming language company to a diverse software development firm, providing the company with essential revenue and marketing resources. It was also the underlying basic operating system on which early versions of Windows ran as a GUI.
